Day 1 (Includes Lunch & Dinner)

Departure from Maun is approx. 0700hrs, the exact departure time is agreed with the guests the night  before the activity.

There is a choice of Mokoro station we can normally use, either Xaraxao, Boro or Ditshipi.

The Xaraxao mokoro station lies on a tributary of the Boro River and contains smallish scenic lagoons adjacent to extensive floodplains. Driving time to Xaraxao is just under one and a half hours from Maun. Scenically the drive may offer a little game viewing en route.

Afro Trek Safaris prefer to go to Xaraxao where we experience a more aquatic ambience and have, over many years, developed a good personal relationship with the polers which is reflected in a more personal mokoro trail experience for guests but the river water levels do dictate which poling station we use.

The drive to the mokoro mooring station on the Boro Channel, situated in the south east of the Okavango Delta in the Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT ) concession area, will take around an hour. The transfer is in customised safari vehicles ( Toyota Landcruisers ) with rear mounted game viewing seats beneath a canvas canopy. The vehicles are fitted with individual style seats with seat belts installed, each vehicle can take a maximum of ten passengers with luggage placed in the trailer.

On arrival at the mokoro mooring station you will meet your mokoro poler guides and polers who will assist with the loading of luggage into the mekoros and with the seating arrangements. Each mokoro takes two persons. The guide polers and polers will be available at all times to help and assist participants whenever required and also to ensure the safety of the participants throughout the mokoro trail.

The mokoro poler guides are licensed and it is the poler guides who lead the mokoro trails , with a guide poler leading and a guide poler at the back of each group of mekoro, steering through  this serene area of narrow reed lined channels in traditional dug-out mekoros, floating through the myriad of waterways which open out unexpectedly onto beautiful lagoons. The most rewarding way to explore and experience the beauty and serenity of these lily-filled waterways is undoubtably by dug-out canoe or mokoro.

The Mokoro Trails offers a snapshot view of the traditional mode of transport utilized for hundreds of years by the Bayei tribes people living in the area. Although the mokoro trails is not primarily a game viewing activity , a variety of game may be spotted in this pristine wilderness area including elephant, giraffe and zebra.

Lions are also present in this area and have sometimes been spotted, from a distance on the bush walks.

After arriving at the Afro Trek Safaris private secluded camp on one of the islands which make up this fragile yet dynamic, unique eco-system , lunch will be served after which a guided bush walk will commence around 1500hrs or a little later dependant on the afternoon temperature, returning to camp before sunset.

Prior to the guided bush walk, the guides will give a comprehensive safety briefing about the environment of the Okavango Delta. The guided bush walk will also be available on the second day.

After the bush walk, time to prepare and take dinner under the starlit Milky Way skies and maybe reflect on the day before retiring for the night.

Day 2 (Includes Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

An early morning game walk will be available for interested persons , returning to to the camp when ready to enjoy breakfast.

After breakfast or brunch, the mekoros can be taken again to enjoy the channels, these intricate veins of waterways which interconnect the lagoons, or take a guided bush walk before having lunch or snacks.

In the afternoon, the guides will take their guests in the mekoros to a safe location where swimming may be possible in the waters of the Okavango Delta, followed by a chance to learn how to pole a mokoro. using the nkashi.

Time can be taken to relax and drink in the landscape.

After the bush walk, we can relax and unwind in the camp, refresh and take dinner under the milky way starlit skies after which the guides and polers will narrate cultural stories and entertain with traditional dances which display animal tracking techniques and gathering methods for traditional medicinal purposes.

Guests interested in astronomy will be treated to one of the most expansive displays of stars on earth, before retiring in cozy tents for the night and drifting off to the sounds of the wild.

Day 3 (Includes Breakfast)

Start the day with another bush walk, experiencing the sights and sounds of this wild magnificent oasis. After the bush walk, a swim maybe, if it is not too cold depending on time of year and time to relax and unwind in the camp for a while enjoying breakfast.

When ready, we journey by mekoro through the channels back to the mekoro mooring station where Afro Trek Safari guides will be waiting with the safari vehicles and cold beverages for the transfer to Moremi Game Reserve for 3 days / 2 nights.

Day 4 - Moremi Game Reserve (Includes Lunch & Dinner)

The safari departs from Maun at 1100 hrs passing through the village of Shorobe en route, heading for South Gate where we enter the Moremi Game Reserve. The drive to South Gate normally takes just under two hours, provided the drive has not been delayed by game spotting on the way.

On arrival at South Gate, whilst the Professional Guide attends to the necessary paperwork required for entry into the reserve, refreshments will be provided during this short break.

The journey continues through the Moremi Game Reserve, game viewing on the way, until the designated camping ground is reached, about a two hour drive from South Gate.

Time to relax and stretch the legs, enjoy a leisurely lunch followed by a relaxation period during which the professional guide will deliver a short briefing about the reserve and other information regarding the safari, before commencing at around 1530 hrs an afternoon game drive which may include Maya Pans, the Little Baobab area and Jessie's Pools for sunset. Return to camp for pre-dinner refreshments, take dinner under the stars and later relax for a while around a blazing campfire listening to the calls of the hyenas and lions before retiring for the night.

Day 5 - Moremi Game Reserve (Includes Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner)

An early morning wake up call for tea or coffee with breakfast cereals and nibbles prepares one for the early morning game drive, leaving camp just after sunrise. The morning drive heads out for game viewing and will proceed through the beautiful scenery of this part of Moremi Game Reserve with a very good chance of viewing buffalo, antelopes and hippos.

Arrive back at the camp late morning where brunch will be ready, to be followed by a siesta period. At 1530 hrs, light refreshments are presented prior to departing on the afternoon game drive which may proceed to Paradise Pools or other interesting areas offering excellent game viewing. Arrive back at the camp before dark to a roaring campfire and late sun-downer refreshments followed by dinner and relaxing to the sounds of the night before retiring.

Day 6 - Moremi Game Reserve – Maun (Includes Breakfast & Lunch)

Another early morning light breakfast with ample tea and coffee just prior to sunrise, departing camp immediately afterwards and proceeding to locate  the big cats in areas that may include Dead Tree Island, lions could be spotted as they follow the herds of buffalo and other game which roam in these areas.  The lagoon of Dead Tree Island is home to a large concentration of hippos and offers an excellent array of aquatic birdlife.

Returning to the camp for the last time, brunch is taken around 1100hrs following which we commence our journey out of the Reserve, game spotting on the way and back to Maun, arriving in Maun at 1600hrs

The game viewing routes chosen on the day by the Professional Guide may differ from the above. When a high flood is experienced, as is expected this year, certain roads may be closed or impassable, but our guides will endeavour to pass through the most interesting areas offering the best game viewing and scenic views available on the day.
